![]() ![]() Am I a good person to judge this? Probably not. ![]() Does it deserve the controversy? Not as far as I can see. Overall I enjoyed the story but understand it? Not at all. To fully appreciate this story I believe you would need to understand the source material and what the real “satanic verses” represent, something I freely confess I don’t understand. With regard to the surface stories I enjoyed following the 3 central characters (for me at least these were Salahuddin, Gibreel & Ayesha) and to see how they would tie together in the end. The story is very erudite and I won’t claim to have understood even a fraction of what was going on under the surface. That said this book did not hold the same appeal for me as some of the others I have read (Midnight’s Children still remains my favourite).Īs with the other novels I have read I loved the magical realism aspects, I enjoyed the satire and the exploration of other cultures but I found myself getting lost. I had heard of the controversy surrounding this book and the death threats against Salman Rushdie luckily they didn’t succeed as I have read and enjoyed several of his novels before reaching for this one. Sir Salman Rushdie is an author whose works include Midnights Children, The Satanic Verses, and Victory City. ![]()

For our purposes here, it’s primarily a matter of cultural ubiquity, though unimpeachable excellence helps any case.) So for those of you who were not present for our epic office argument, I have listed some of them here. ![]() Turns out, despite frequent (false) claims that poetry is dead and/or irrelevant and/or boring, there are plenty of poems that have sunk deep into our collective consciousness as cultural icons. Today is the anniversary of the publication of Robert Frost’s iconic poem “ Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening,” a fact that spurred the Literary Hub office into a long conversation about their favorite poems, the most iconic poems written in English, and which poems we should all have already read (or at least be reading next). ![]() ![]() ![]() In Europe, the militarily defeated Romanovs, Hohenzollerns, and Habsburgs had to abdicate or resign, and Russia, Germany, and Austria became democratic republics with universal - male and female - suffrage and parliamentary governments. ![]() ![]() Only four years later, after the United States had entered the European war and decisively determined its outcome, monarchies all but disappeared, and Europe along with the entire world entered the age of democratic republicanism. e., one in which supreme power was vested in an elected parliament. Or perhaps it’s more accurate to say this book was largely story padding for the trilogy. That’s totally what this book felt like to me. You know those TV show episodes that don’t have much to do with the overarching plot for the season and just focus on a self-contained mini plot in order to kill time?
